Glagow World Cup

The Glasgow World Cup, which is being held at the Emirates Arena is the final World Cup event for 2012 and is a part of the 2012-2013 All Around World Cup series. The competition is divided into two sessions, the first starting at 1.00pm (Glasgow local time) with the second commencing at 4.00pm (Glasgow local time). The competition boasts an exciting line up and it is expected to be one fierce World Cup!

The competition opened with an exhibition piece on the Uneven Bars by Beth Tweddle! Leyva fell to his knees on his final pass and had a few jumps out of passes, looks disappointed with his efforts. They're using music whilst the Men are performing on Floor Exercise, it is quite weird! Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine is not competing! After the first rotation, Kristian Thomas (GBR) leads over Marcel Nguyen (GER) and Fabian Gonzalez (ESP). Two falls on Pommel for Thomas. After the Pommel Horse, Gonzalez leads over Daniel Purvis of Great Britain and Kazuhito Tanaka of Japan. At the halfway point Purvis leads over Tanaka and Marcel Nguyen. Purvis top scored on the Vault, Nguyen on Parallel Bars and Yusuke Saito of Japan on the Horizontal Bar. The competition was won by Marcel Nguyen however, with Tanaka and Purvis picking up the silver and bronze respectively.

Elizabeth Price wears Pink, the British ladies are wearing black with the gold and white Union Jack, Seitz is wearing the half white/half red leo, Hofland is wearing the green (is that green)? leotard with the detailing on the front, Inoue is wearing a red leo with white, yellow and black strip diagonally down the middle, Bui i wearing the German leotard that we all know and Ferrari is wearing a pretty colored leo with the one sleeve and cutout. Wakana Inoue sat down her Yurchenko 1.5. But she's still smiling. After the first rotation, American Elizabeth Price leads over Great Britain's Rebecca Tunney and Germany's Elisabeth Seitz. Fall for Hofland off Bars. Deep squat and a few steps back on the dismount on Bars for Niamh Rippin. Top three remain unchanged at halfway in competition. Price topped the final two events, taking out the title over Germany's Elisabeth Seitz and Kim Bui

Petzold Siblings Featured in Article

An article on The Voice online, has featured an article on Brittany and Kirsten Petzold, who will competing together for the first time at collegiate level in the 2012-2013 NCAA Gymnastics season. Both sisters will be competing for the Central Michigan University Chippewas, and you can see the article in full at the following link: http://www.voicenews.com/articles/2012/12/27/sports/doc50dca40d66f54663722250.txt

It is a fantastic read, and I would like to take time to wish Brittany, Kirsten and the entire CMU Gymnastics Team the best of luck for the upcoming season.

Here's a section from the article where they interview the girls' mother:
Brittany and Kirsten have followed almost identical paths to get where they are, but they are very different people. Just listen to their mother.

"Brittany is miss perfect," Sheri Petzold said. "She has to do everything 50,000 times until she gets it right. Kirsten is my social butterfly. She'll sit back and watch something and analyze it and then do it."

Sheri and Dewane Petzold are thrilled that Kirsten has Brittany at CMU to show the way. They are also happy their travel load is about to be lightened. They attend all of their daughters' meets, so that has meant father and mother splitting up often to cover both girls.

"It's going to be wonderful to go to the same place," Sheri said. "We're going to save some money."

Central Michigan will be gunning for its fourth straight MAC title this season. Brittany and Kirsten Petzold figure to play prominent roles in that effort.

Happy New Year!

Firstly, I apologize if I have missed out on anyone from this list, if you have any amendments please feel free to post a comment and I will add them to the post! In the wake of the article on the Petzold sisters, Brittany and Kirsten who both compete for the NCAA team Central Michigan University (see http://chimgym.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/petzold-siblings-featured-in-article.html), I thought that it would be interesting to see which CURRENT NCAA Gymnasts have siblings also competing this year and those who are CURRENTLY competing and have siblings who also competed at the collegiate level.

THOSE COMPETING FOR THE SAME TEAM:

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-BERKELEY:

Christian and Jean Nathan Monteclaro (Seniors - Twins): Image from the 2011 Philippine National Games, source Journeying James (the twins in white). Both compete internationally for the Philippines, and competed at the 2011 World Championships. Jean Nathan also competed at the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships where he finished 14th All Around, scoring 80.950. Christian was a regular on Still Rings and Vault in 2011 finishing second on the Vault with a score of 16.250 at the NCAA Individual Championships. They both train Floor, Rings and Vault for the Golden Bears. Jean Nathan was also a regular on Still Rings and Vault in 2011.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY:

Brittany (image from macsports.com and Kirsten Petzold (Junior and Freshman respectively): Brittany goes into the 2013 season as the defending MAC All Around Champion - see her floor routine from last year here courtesy of Gymnastike. Kirsten or Kiki comes into the team as the 2012 J.O. NIT Vault champion.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY:

Alexis and Sara Schupp (Junior and Freshman respectively): Video of Sara training on Vault on the 20th November courtesy of cornellathletics Youtube channel. Alexis or Lexi tied for 11th placing on the Uneven Bars at the 2012 ECAC Championships.
UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA:

Mackenzie and Bridgette Caquatto (Junior and Freshman respectively): Image courtesy of USA Gymnastics. Arguably the more well known of the siblings in this section, check out a fabulous feature courtesy of Gymnastike here on the sister's feelings about competing for the same team again.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK:

Karen and Kathy Tang (Junior and Freshman respectively): Karen earned All-EAGL first team honors on the Uneven Bars last year and is set to be an important contributor to the Maryland team once again. Kathy is also set to be a fantastic asset to the team and at the recent Red versus Black Intrasquad on the 7th of December she notably scored a perfect 10 on Vault. Video of Karen's floor from the Intrasquad, courtesy of Youtube user DMannProductions. Also check out Kathy's routine on Floor Exercise here.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA, LINCOLN:

Amanda and Jennifer Lauer (Twins - Sophomores): Can you spot the twins? (Image from Nebraska University athletics website). Amanda contributed on all four events at the Intrasquad competition early in December. And according to the information from her profile on the roster and is likely to break into the Beam lineup but also could contribute on Vault and Floor, whilst Jennifer will aim to be a three event contributor - Vault, Beam and Floor. At the recent Intrasquad she put in a solid showing on the Uneven Bars.
PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY:

Women's Team member Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Junior) and her brother Ismael Sanabria who competes on the Men's team (Sophomore): Video from the GoPSUTV Channel of an update on the Women's Pre-Season featuring Sidney and Madison Merriam. Both Sidney and Ismael competed internationally as members of the Puerto Rican National Team. This is Sidney's first year competing for Penn State after receiving a medical hardship for a knee injury which occured before fall practice in her Freshman year at Louisiana State University. At the recent Blue and White Intrasquad, Sidney shared the titles on Balance Beam and Uneven Bars. Ismael was redshirted last year but hopes to contribute to the team this year.

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY:

Allison and Amy Bellingham (Twins - Freshman): Image from SJSU Athletics of the 2013 Freshman. Image used as part of the December 3rd Gym Talk feature which was written by the girls. Read it here. The piece features a great insight into what it feels like to compete in the first exhibition as Freshmen.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY:

Stephanie Verry (Sophomore) sister to Zachary Aguiar (Temple Men's team - Senior): Video uploaded to Youtube by user KCanning16 of Stephanie's 9.775 scoring Floor routine from the USAG National Championships. Zachary is an All Around competitor for the Owls and should be looking to be a valued contributor to the team in his Senior year.

The first four meets of the first week of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics were contested last night. I spent the night at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center at the University of Florida, watching the Gators open the season with a commanding performance over Ball State University. It was a fantastic competition to mark the start of the season for the Gators with their gymnasts scooping all the titles on offer. Florida's Bridget Sloan impressed in the first meet of her collegiate career whilst Mackenzie Caquatto, Kytra Hunter and Randy Stageberg also impressed. Freshman Denaisha Christian of Ball State, had a great first meet, and I must say that it is great to see Brittney Emmons who is is in her fifth year of NCAA eligibility competing the All Around.

Louisiana State University also dominated their opener against North Carolina State at home in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Sophomore Rheagan Courville of LSU took out the All Around honors as well as the Balance Beam and Floor Exercise honors, with team mate Sarie Morrison earning the Vault and Uneven Bars titles. Louisiana's Freshman Jessica Savona made a solid debut for the team tying for third on Vault and second on the Balance Beam and finishing third on the Floor Exercise. Junior Diahanna Ham was a standout performer for North Carolina State.

The Cancun Classic saw the University of Michigan take out the team title with their highest team total since 2011. Brigham Young University finished second with Oregon State in third. Michigan's Joanna Sampson, Sachi Sugiyama and Katie Zurales went 1-2-3 in the All Around. Sampson picked up the Vault title, whilst Sugiyama, Sampson and Brigham Young Junior Raquel Willman tied for the honors on the Uneven Bars. Zurales picked up the Balance Beam title while Sugiyama also took out the Floor Exercise. Willman and fellow Junior Megan Bain were standout performers from Brigham Young, whilst for Oregon State University, Hailey Gaspar, Melanie Jones and Makayla Stambaugh were shining lights.

The NorCal Quad meet, held at The Event Center on the San Jose State University campus was won by Stanford University, with San Jose State finishing in second place with UC Davis beating out Sacramento State for third. Sacramento State Sophomore Kallilah McCartney won the All Around title over San Jose's Cami Guyer and Sacramento State Freshman Cassie Benning. Stanford Senior Nicole Dayton topped team mates Ivana Hong and Melissa Chuang for the Vault title, whilst on the Uneven Bars Stanford's Ashley Morgan tied with UC Davis' Michelle Ho for the title. Kristina Vaculik and Amanda Spinner both of Stanford tied for the Balance Beam honors, whilst San Jose State Junior Julia Greer took out the Floor title.

The 2013 American Cup will take place on the 2nd of March at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. The first All Around World Cup event for 2013 boasts an exciting line up even though one Female gymnast is yet to be added to the draw. Also the Women's Artistic representative from Canada and Men's representative from Japan are yet to be announced. Elizabeth Price and Kyla Ross will be the home country favorites however definitely do not count out any of the other Women who have been named to the field! The Men's field is very strong but I think Marcel Nguyen of Germany and Americans Jacob Dalton and Danell Leyva are standouts. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing Colombian stalwart Jorge Hugo Giraldo Lopez competing!
